UCO Whips Southeastern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team whipped Southeastern Oklahoma State 10-5 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos improved to 5-4 with the win, their fourth-straight.

"We had a big third inning, but I thought we did a good job of putting the pressure on their arms throughout the game," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "That helped our pitchers too. We got a good start our of Ryan Lemoine, and though we let up for just a bit in the seventh, and we can't do that, overall we did really well on the mound."

Lemoine, a senior, got the win on the day to improve to 2-1 on the season. He beat Oklahoma Christian in the season-opener on Feb. 1. Tuesday, Lemoine threw 5 1/3 innings, and allowed three hits and three runs. He also struck out three batters and only walked one.

Southeastern popped a solo home run off of Lemoine in the game's first at bat to take a 1-0 lead. The Savage Storm would be silenced though over the next five innings while UCO steadily built its lead.

Paul Kropf led off the bottom of the second reaching on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second base on the wild throw. T.J. Sparr followed with a single through the left side to move Kropf over to third. He would score on the next play, when Caleb Peters hit into a double play.

In the third, UCO's offense had its best inning of the game.

With two outs and two runners on base, Jake Dyer scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Kyle Miskvosky moved to third on the play. After Kropf walked, and stole second, Sparr reached on an error by the third baseman and Miskovsky scored on the play to make it 3-1, UCO.

With Kropf and Sparr on base, Peters then smacked a 1-1 pitch out of the park to make it 6-1 Bronchos. Peters would also knock in Xavier Freeman in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out single to make it 7-1.

Southeastern made it interesting, scoring four in the top of the sixth. Lemoine gave up a single, struck out a batter, then walked the next before UCO went with a pitching change. The Bronchos brought in Junior Obeso, who threw just 1/3 of an inning and gave up two runs.

UCO then brought in Ben Wusterbarth, who allowed a hit that scored the two runs credited to Obeso. That made it 7-5 Central. Wusterbarth struck out the final batter of the sixth, and got out of a two-out bases load jam in the seventh, before leaving the rest to his teammates.

Josh Rutland struck out the side in the eighth, and Austin Lambright came on to close it out in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts himself.

Peters led the Bronchos on the day, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Kropf was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. His solo homer in the bottom of the seventh gave him his only RBI of the day.

Jake Dyer also collected two hits on the day. Cole Sanderson added a two-RBI double to left center in the bottom of the seventh to score Sparr and Anthony Alvarez and make it 10-5, UCO.

Central is off for eight days, though its homestand continues next week upon return. The Bronchos host Southwestern Oklahoma State next Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
