UCO Falls Short Against Southeastern

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team lost its second game in as many days, falling 7-6 to Southeastern Oklahoma State on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth at the Air Hogs Division II Classic Saturday afternoon.

Austin Lambright, who relieved Junior Obeso after a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth, was called for a balk on a pick-off attempt at first. Lambright then threw a wild pitch to allow the runner to move to third. Easton Elliot then hit the game-winning base knock into left field, scoring Travis Spinney.

"That one stings a little," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We were able to get an early lead and we should be able to hold on to those and win some games. We've got to correct that. But, hats off to Southeastern. They got it done in the end."

UCO jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Saturday, something it hadn't done in either of its first two games.

Xavier Warren scored in the top of the third inning on a Kyle Miskovsky double. UCO added two more in the fourth when D.J. Gasso a two-RBI single to center field. Southeastern though answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.

UCO took a brief one-run lead in the top of the sixth inning when Justin Brown, who was hit by a pitch to get on first, and moved up to second when Taylor Avila drew a walk, would score on a throwing error by the Southeastern third baseman. Carson Green hit a routine ground ball to third, but the throw first was high, and Brown scored from second on the play.

Again though, Southeastern responded, scoring three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead.

Xavier Freeman added the final two Broncho runs with one swing of the bat in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Freeman pinch-hit for designated hitter Trae Smith. He saw a 2-1 pitch he liked and put it into a jet stream from nearby Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. T.J. Sparr, who doubled earlier in the inning crossed the plate ahead of Freeman and the game was tied 6-6.

After two scoreless innings for both teams, Obeso took the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Southeastern won it moments later.

Obeso took the loss on the day. JJ Rogers started for the Bronchos and threw 5 1/3, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk. J.D. Cameron threw just 1/3 of an inning and allowed two earned on five hits. Landon Bond threw 2/3 scoreless before Obeso replaced him in the seventh.

Miskovsky led the UCO offense with a 2-for-5 day and one RBI. Sparr was also 2-for-5 with a run scored. Paul Kropf joined Freeman, Avila, Gasso, Dayne Sommer, and Warren with one hit apiece.

Despite an 8-6 win against Oklahoma Christian on opening day, the Bronchos have come out of the gates slow in 2018. UCO has struck out 32 times in three games, and the pitching staff sits with a 6-plus earned run average.

Central has one more game in Grand Prairie, Sunday at 7 p.m. against Southern Arkansas. UCO then returns home to open the newly renovated Wendell Simmons Field on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist.
