Bronchos Bash the Ichabods

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma stretched its winning streak to six games Sunday afternoon with an 11-2 romp of Washburn in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos (7-4, 2-0) led 1-0 in the first inning, and 6-2 after four innings, dominating the Washburn pitching staff early and often.

"We had a good day with our bats," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I thought the team did well to put the ball in play and some of the guys took some good cuts to get the ball out of the park. We had some really good pitching today too."

Paul Kropf hit a lead-off, solo homer in the top of the fourth inning to make it 2-1. After Dayne Sommer singled through the left side, T.J. Sparr drew a four-pitch walk, and D.J. Gasso singled on a bunt, Taylor Avila crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall and the Bronchos led 6-1.

UCO senior shortstop Justin Brown hit his first home run since his sophomore season at Northern Oklahoma in the top of the sixth. Anthony Alvarez made it four homers for the Bronchos when the senior third baseman hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth.

Nine different Bronchos got a hit Sunday. All 10 batters that stepped to the plate reached base. Brown led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He scored twice.

J.J. Rogers got the start for the Bronchos, and the win. The junior threw a solid 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs. He struck out six on the day. Sunday was the second time in three starts that Rogers had six Ks.

Gaylon Viney came on to pitch for Rogers in the fifth, and finished the game. Viney was dominant in striking out seven through 4 2/3 innings. He did not allow even one hit, but did walk two batters.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn, originally scheduled to play in Topeka, Kan. this weekend, will wrap up the three-game conference series Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
