Central Wins MIAA Opener in Extras

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team won its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener Saturday afternoon with an extra-inning 3-2 win over Washburn at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos, originally scheduled to play in Topeka, Kan. this weekend, hosted Washburn due to inclement weather a few hundred miles up Interstate-35. UCO improved to 6-4 on the season after the 10-inning affair Saturday, and earned a 1-0 start to league play.

"We left too many runners on base today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It's good when you can come away with a win, but I think our offense is too good to be playing a 3-2 game. We left 12 runners on and we need to get better at moving those guys around the bases some more."

On the mound, Ryan Lemoine got the start, his third of the season, and left after 6 1/3 with seven strikeouts. He allowed five hits and both runs to Washburn. Lemoine gave up a solo homer to lead-off the fourth inning and after a lead-off walk in the seventh, was replaced with Ben Wusterbarth. Washburn knocked an RBI single to center field in the next at bat.

But the Ichabods wouldn't get anything else.

Dayne Sommer in the top of the tenth – UCO batting first as the visiting team on the scoreboard in its own ball park – smacked a one-out single to right field. He stole second, and then advanced to third on a passed ball. After Xavier Warren struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, Sommer would come home for the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Central also got a solo home run for Paul Kropf to lead off the top of the second inning. Kropf grounded into a double play in the top of the sixth, but Kyle Miskovsky scored from third on the play. That gave UCO a 2-1 lead.

Miskovsky's two hits on the day led the Broncho offense – which scattered six on the afternoon. Miskovsky has reached base in each of the nine games he's played this season. He's recorded a hit in eight of those and leads the Bronchos with a .412 batting average.

Wusterbarth finished throwing just 1/3 of an inning. Josh Rutland came on and threw 2 1/3, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters. He got the win, his first of the season and first as a Broncho. Austin Lambright struck out one in the 10th inning to pick up his second save of the year.

Central will play the second of a three-game series against Washburn at 1 p.m. Sunday. The MIAA-opening series will conclude Monday at 1 p.m.
