UCO blanked by Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Minnesota State Friday in the NCAA Central Regional.

The Bronchos now move to the consolation bracket and will play an elimination game at 4 p.m. Friday against the winner of Pittsburg State and Augustana. The winner of that game will get another shot at MSU, and would have to win twice to advance.

Minnesota State struck early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Jayden Chestnut got the start and blanked the Mavericks the rest of the way.

Unfortunately, the Bronchos couldn't get any offense against National Player of the Year candidate Coley Ries. The MSU senior shut down the potent Broncho offense, allowing just three hits and striking out 11.

Tori Collet got a single in the second inning and Carli Jones followed with a double. But UCO couldn't capitalize and stranded both runners. Jones got another double in the top of the seventh, but the game ended moments later as Ashleigh Tramel popped up to right field.

"We knew Coley had some incredible stuff and this was going to be a big challenge," UCO head coach Cody White said. "She got us this time, now we got to focus on the game later and hope to get another chance at her tomorrow."

The Bronchos lost 6-5 to Augustana in the regular season, and have beaten Pittsburg State in all three meetings including in Thursday's opening round game.
