Bronchos clip 'Hawks in Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Northeastern State 11-8 Tuesday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Rousey Field.

The Bronchos (24-17-1, 14-16) got a much needed win in a tight race for a spot in the MIAA Tournament next month. Central and Northeastern came into the game tied for ninth-place in the conference standings, just one spot out of the playoff picture with two weeks to play.

"I'm proud of the way the guys came through today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Northeastern battled us, but we fought back. We need to keep this going."

Greg Hyde picked up the win Tuesday for the Bronchos after throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief work. Hyde came on for starter Brock Stuber in the second inning after Northeastern put four runs on the board.

Hyde would allow another three during his time on the mound, but the Broncho offense came through with enough run support to keep UCO ahead before making another call to the bullpen.

Gaylon Viney, Ben Wusterbarth, and J.D. Cameron teamed up to keep the Riverhawks at bay, only allowing one more run to cross the plate.

UCO had an 11-8 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, setting up an historic opportunity for the Bronchos.

Gibson Russ entered the game to start the inning looking to tie the school record for most saves in a single season.

Russ got the first batter to pop-up on a 2-1 pitch to UCO first baseman Jon Kamies. Russ then got the second batter to pop-up to shortstop Justin Brown and put NSU on the ropes.

Michael Rhea was up to bat for Northeastern. He looked at a strike, then at a ball. Then, fouled off three-straight pitches before a swing and a miss on the sixth pitch of the at bat, giving Russ his record-tying 10th save of the season.

Russ tied the mark set by Cameron Karner in 2007. Russ also has 13 saves for his career after getting three saves in his first season with the program in 2016. That also tied a school record. Karner had 13 career saves, as did Ray Wood (2002-04) and George Hauser (1982-84).

Tuesday, Central Oklahoma scored 11 runs on 11 hits. Brown led the way. The senior was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored and also stole two bases.

Jake Dyer and Dayne Sommer each had two hits on the day. Dyer scored a team-high three runs Tuesday, and added two RBIs.
UCO used the home run ball to its advantage Tuesday, smacking four out of the park. Brenton Washausen hit his fourth of the season, Sommer hit his first, and Kyle Miskovsky also hit his fourth of the season.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning Tuesday. And after allowing four runs in the second, answered with one in the third, and three each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Northeastern State then scored four straight, plating one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and another in the seventh to make it 9-8 before UCO added its final insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning on Sommer's two-run homer.

Central Oklahoma has six games left on the schedule this season. The Bronchos host Washburn for a three-game series this weekend at Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond. UCO will host Nebraska-Kearney the following weekend for three games, the final three of the regular season.
