Bronchos walk-off Washburn behind Justin Brown RBI single

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Washburn 4-3 Friday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos (25-17-1, 15-16) trailed 3-0 after three innings, but battled back to win in dramatic fashion. UCO scored two in the fifth, another in the eighth, and one game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

"We showed some good fight today, not giving up," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We had trouble getting things going, but the guys didn't give up. We need to keep that up for the rest of the weekend."

Justin Brown scored his first walk-off hit of the season with an RBI single to score Xavier Warren. Jon Kamies led off the ninth with a single, and after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Alvarez, Warren came on to run for Kamies.

T.J. Sparr then reached safely on a fielder's choice as Warren made it to third. Washburn opted to intentionally walk Kyle Miskovsky to load the bases for Justin Brown with one out, with the hopes a force out or a double play would be easier to turn. Brown had other plans when he lined a shot to left to score Warren.

Gibson Russ picked up the win for the Bronchos after holding Washburn scoreless over the final 1 1/3 innings. Russ, who has a UCO record 10 saves on the season, is also 4-1 during his senior campaign.

J.J. Rogers got the start for the Bronchos, and threw seven solid innings, allowing just a short burst for Washburn in the third. Rogers finished with six hits and three earned runs. He struck out four and walked just one batter on the day. J.D. Cameron threw 2/3 of an inning in relief to setup Russ.

Jake Dyer led the Bronchos from the plate Friday, going 3 of 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Dyer singled to center field in the bottom of the fifth to score Miskovsky and Sparr. That 2-RBI shot made it 3-2.

Dyer scored the lone run in the eighth after leading off with a double. Korey Floyd bunted to move Dyer over to third and the Washburn catcher made a throwing error, allowing Dyer to score and tie the game 3-3.

Eight Bronchos got a hit Friday. Dyer's three led the way, Kamies added two.

The second of three games this weekend is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m.
