Bronchos unleash on Riverhawks

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Northeastern State 13-5 Tuesday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Wendell Simmons Field.

Holden Capps got a rare mid-week start for the Bronchos, but picked up his fifth win in doing so. UCO improves to 22-15-1 on the season with the win. More importantly, the Bronchos moved closer to .500 in conference play.

"We really needed that," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We've been on a slide and we let them beat us last week. This isn't a good time to do things like that, so I hope this helps our guys reset and re-focus for the final stretch."

The Bronchos are 12-14 in conference play with the win. UCO began the day 10th in the MIAA standings – eight teams make the postseason conference tournament. UCO is still in 10th with the win, however, the Bronchos are now just one game back of sixth-place Northwest Missouri. Central Oklahoma plays three games at Northwest this weekend.

"You just have to think of every game like it's the postseason at this point," Martin said. "There are only a couple of weeks left in the regular season. Every game can move you up or down in the standings from here on out."

Capps picked up the win Tuesday after throwing six innings, allowing four hits, four walks and four runs and striking out three. The Broncho bats have hit well this season but the same can't be said for how Central has moved runners around to score.

That changed Tuesday and it changed quick.

Jake Dyer started it with a single to right field on the first pitch of the game. Korey Floyd helped Dyer reach second on a groundout to third on the next at bat. Then Dyer advanced to third on a wild pitch as Anthony Alvarez stood at the plate. Alvarez was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners before Dayne Sommer was also hit by a pitch to load the bases.

After a Kyle Miskovsky strikeout, Glen Reeves singled through the right side to score Dyer. Then Caleb Peters – in the seven-hole – slapped a shot out to left field to score both Alvarez and Sommer and make it 3-0 UCO.

NSU grabbed a pair of runs back in the second, and tied the game in the top of the third inning, but UCO responded.

In the bottom of the third, Alvarez was hit by a pitch again and next, Miskovsky reached on an error by the shortstop. Then Alvarez was caught stealing third, but Miskovsky moved to second while Reeves stood in the batter's box.

Reeves – who made a rare start at first base for the Bronchos – reached on a single to second base and picked up his second RBI of the day as Miskovsky scored and gave the Bronchos a 4-3 lead.

UCO made it 5-3 in the fifth and after NSU plated another run, made it 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Then the Bronchos blew it open in the bottom of the eighth. UCO chased Northeastern's reliever after four at bats when three of them went for doubles. Reeves led off with a double, then Chris Lobato and Justin Brown each knocked a two-bagger.

At that point, UCO had only scored two in the inning. Central would score seven in the frame after a pair of singles, a pair of errors, and a bases-loaded walk. Following a second pitching change, it was 13-4 UCO. The Bronchos then had a chance to end the game by way of run-rule.

Batting for the second time in the inning, Lobato struck out with Jon Kamies on second. Had Kamies made it home, the game would have ended with a 10-run mercy rule.

But Lobato struck out, then Gibson Russ finished off the game in the ninth. Russ, who has the second-most saves in a single season in UCO history, came on in a non-save situation, gave up one run on one hit, but got the three outs need to give the Bronchos the victory.

UCO racked up 13 hits Tuesday. Reeves led the way with three, Lobato and Floyd added two each. Reeves and Peters each knocked in three RBIs to lead the team Tuesday. Dyer, Floyd, Sommer, Alvarez and Lobato each scored twice.

Up next, Central begins its crucial three-game series with Northwest Missouri State on Friday at 3 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
