Bronchos open outdoor season with success in Kansas

WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma track & field team Thursday took to the Southwestern College Invitational for its first outdoor action of the 2017 season and the Bronchos ended the one-day event with eight top-10 finishes.

Kira Douglas and Erin Drewke got the day started for the Bronchos in the 100-meter hurdles. Though the pair didn't fare well in that event, the 400m hurdles were next and the two did so in the latter. Douglas finished third in the 400 with a time of 1:08.74, and Drewke took eighth with her 1:13.81 finish.
 
In the shot put, Savannah Waters kept it going, finishing third with a 12.57m throw – or 41 feet, 3 inches. She also kept the pace in the discus, throwing 38.40m – or 126 feet – to finish seventh.
 
Mariah Garcia won the hammer throw, hitting 52.35m (171 feet, 9 inches). Waters was behind her in third place with a 48.26m throw. Elizabeth Grothe also cracked the top-10 in that event, throwing 37.82m.
 
The final Broncho to compete Thursday was Daniella Szabo, who finished second in the long jump. Szabo jumped 5.68m – 18 feet, 7 3/4 inches – and only missed winning the event by one and a quarter inch.
