Bronchos edge past Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Oklahoma Christian 5-4 Wednesday in the final non-conference game of the season for the Bronchos.

UCO (15-5-1) built an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, and led 4-0 in the top of the seventh before surrendering all four OC runs in that inning. Central responded with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eight.

"Our guys showed some fight today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I wasn't happy at all that we let them back into it. This game shouldn't have been this close. But our guys didn't give up when it got tough, they responded, and that attitude and determination will help us down the road."

Greg Hyde picked up the win Wednesday for the Bronchos, throwing 1 2/3 innings of relief pitching in the seventh and eighth innings. Hyde got the Bronchos out of a bases-loaded jam and ended Oklahoma Christian's big inning. Gibson Russ came on in the ninth to get the save for the Bronchos, his fourth of the season.

Korey Floyd led off the second inning for the Bronchos Wednesday, with a single to left field. Brent Washausen followed with a single to left of his own before Dayne Sommer sacrificed the two over to second and third.

T.J. Sparr then earned a sacrifice fly on the next at bat, scoring Floyd on his pop-up to center field. Next up, Kyle Miskovsky scored an RBI single to the center to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

UCO struck again in the fourth and did so this time with two outs on the board. Floyd and Washausen both got out to start the inning off, but then Sommer singled on a slow roller to the left of the shortstop. Sparr came up and singles as well, moving Sommer to third.

Then, Sparr stole second base. The throw went under the glove of the second baseman and into center field and Sommer trotted home to make it 3-0, Central.

In the fifth, Justin Brown led off with a single to left center, and moved all the way to third on a Jake Dyer groundout to the second baseman. Anthony Alvarez then singled to right field to score Brown and make it 4-0, UCO.

J.J. Rogers got the start for the Bronchos Wednesday, and threw a solid six-shutout innings. He allowed four hits and added four strikeouts.

Shawn Troutman came on to relieve Rogers in the seventh and gave up three earned runs in 1/3 of an inning. Ben Wusterbarth came on for Troutman but gave up the tying run before recording an out and Martin had to call to his bullpen for a second time in the inning. Hyde entered, got the Bronchos out of the jam.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jon Kamies led off and was hit by a pitch. Floyd sacrificed Kamies to second. After Washausen struck out, Sommer came up and delivered a shot up the middle. Kamies came around to score the game-winning run.

Russ got the first batter in the top of the ninth to fly out to center field, then picked up a strikeout for the second out of the inning, before finally getting another pop-fly to end the game and give the Bronchos the win.

Central Oklahoma hits the road again this weekend. The Bronchos, fresh off a five-game road trip last week, head to St. Charles, Mo. for a three-game MIAA series against Lindenwood beginning Friday. UCO is back home on Tuesday, March 21 against Missouri Southern.
