Late rally lifts Bronchos over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Lindenwood 5-2 Friday night in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play behind a dominant performance from the Broncho pitching staff.

The Bronchos (16-5-1, 6-4) got nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings from starter Holden Capps, then got 2 2/3 shutout innings from Ben Wusterbarth and Gibson Russ. Wusterbarth picked up the win on the day and is now 2-0 on the season. Capps took a no decision after leaving with the game tied 2-2. Russ picked up his fifth save of the season after closing out the win.

"That's what we're going to need from our pitchers," UCO head coach John Martin said. "That kind of performance is what it's going to take for us to be successful. I'm proud of the three that got it done today."

Capps has a team-high 42 strikeouts on the season after Friday's win.

The Broncho pitchers still needed some run support though, and they got it Friday in a non-traditional way. Central Oklahoma scored five runs Friday on four hits.

Glen Reeves had one of those hits and it was a two-RBI single in the second to give the Bronchos an early 2-1 lead. Central Oklahoma struck out at the plate six times Friday and all of those came at the hand of Lindenwood starter Brendan Feldman. Feldman came into the game second in the MIAA with 46 strikeouts.

But Feldman left the game after seven innings and the game tied 2-2. He, like Capps, took a no decision. Marshall Shill came on in the eighth for Lindenwood and the Bronchos were ready to pounce.

Trae Smith pinch-hit for Brent Washausen to lead off the inning and doubled to right-center before Xavier Warren came on to pinch-run for Smith.

Dayne Sommer then was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. Cole Sanderson stepped in as a pinch-hitter for T.J. Sparr, and laid down a sacrifice-bunt to move Sommer to second and Warren to third. In stepped Reeves, who would notch his third RBI of the day with a pop-fly to left deep enough to score Warren after the out. Lindenwood got to the bottom of the eighth trailing 3-2, but couldn't get anything going on Wusterbarth or Russ. Then the Bronchos added some insurance.

Jake Dyer was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth, then stole second before an Anthony Alvarez ground out moved him over to third base. Shill then hit a third batter, Korey Floyd, with no outs still in the ninth before Lindenwood made another pitching change and brought D.J. Hickey to the mound.

Gaylon Viney then pinch-hit for Warren, and reached safely on a throwing error by the shortstop. Floyd stole second before Viney put his bat on the ball and would follow Dyer home after the Lindenwood error. Suddenly it was 5-2 Central heading to the bottom of the ninth, where Russ closed it out.

The teams are playing a three-game series this weekend. The second game is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. with the finale slated for Sunday at noon.
