Bronchos pull away in slugfest with Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team outlasted Southwest Baptist in a slugfest 15-9 to win its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game of the season Friday afternoon.

The Bronchos (8-1) scored three in the top of the first, surrendered six in the bottom of the first, and needed to keep the bats going all day to pick up their fifth consecutive win.

Holden Capps earned the win Friday, improving to 3-0 on the season. Capps did allow a season-high nine earned runs in six innings of work, but also struck out seven in the start.

Jon Kamies highlighted the offensive onslaught for the Bronchos, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. The All-American utility player started in right field Friday, and scored three runs on the day.

Jake Dyer also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 as well. Dyer filled the designated hitter slot for the Bronchos, and scored four runs on the day.

Korey Floyd went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, Trae Smith went 3-for-6 with an RBI and one run scored. Caleb Peters also hit two home runs Friday.

"We needed the guys on offense today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I'm proud of Holden for staying strong on the mound. And I'm really proud of the guys for staying strong on offense. They hung in there, were patient, and got the job done."

The Bronchos allowed six in the opening frame, and three more in the fifth. But UCO put up three runs in the first, three more in the fourth, and had a big, six-run sixth inning to pull ahead and get the win.

Ben Wusterbarth came on in relief of Capps in the seventh and threw three scoreless to pick up his first save of the season. Wusterbarth struck out one in his three innings, and allowed just two hits to close out the game.

UCO and Southwest Baptist return to action Saturday afternoon, and close out the three-game conference series on Sunday afternoon. Both games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
