Indoor Season Arrives For Central Oklahoma

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Ashely Hughes used a strong finish in the 800-meter run to surge up the standings to an eighth-place finish at the Boo Rogers Combined Events at Pittsburg State as the University of Central Oklahoma track & field Indoor season officially began Friday.
 
Hughes tallied 3,123 points in Friday's pentathlon for the eight-place finish after running the fifth event-800 in 2:25.61. Teammate Miquel Roach finished 10th with 3,026 points.

Hughes, a senior from Altus, Okla., started the day with a 9.73 in the 60-meter hurdles. That mark was 12th overall in the 15-person field. Roach ran the opening event in 9.65 seconds to finish 10th.
 
The second event was the high jump. Roach fared well in the event, clearing 1.61 meters (5 feet, 3 1/4 inches) on her fifth jump. That tied her for third in the event and earned the UCO senior from the Bahamas 747 points. Hughes jumped 1.49 meters (4 feet, 10 inches) on her second jump of the day to finish tied for ninth in the event.
 
The shot put was next and Roach again finished third after an 11.06-meter heave on her third throw. She grabbed 599 points in the event. Hughes threw 9.72 meters on her first throw and kept that as her best to finish 10th in the event.
 
Roach again notched a top-five finish in the fourth event – a fourth-place showing in the long jump. Roach jumped 5.13 meters on her first attempt before a pair of fouls. She kept that mark to earn 595 more points heading into the final event. Hughes finished 11th with a 4.74-meter jump on her second attempt.
 
Hughes saved her best performance for last – a fifth-place showing in the 800 after her 2:25.61 time – to move up the board. Roach ran the final event in 3:06 – 14th in the group – to slip down to 10th overall.
 
With the annual Boo Rogers Combined Events complete, Indoor season is officially here for Central Oklahoma. The rest of the Broncho track & field team meets Hughes and Roach in Pittsburg Saturday for the Crimson & Gold Invitational.
