Central Competes In Crimson & Gold Invite

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma track and field team opened its indoor season this weekend at the Crimson & Gold Invitational at Pittsburg State. The Bronchos finished Saturday with four top-10 finishes across the board, and had a pair of top-20 finishes in the long jump.

Madelyn Caldwell had the best performance of the day for the Bronchos. The sophomore from Pauls Valley, Okla. threw her way to a fifth-place finish in the weight throw after hitting a mark of 15.96 meters, or 52 feet, 4 inches. Caldwell was less than one meter short of an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark with the throw.

Amber Covin also hit a top-10 mark on the day. The junior from Edmond, Okla. earned a ninth-place finish after landing a 2.91m mark in the pole vault.

Skylar Standokes and Kaici Phillips, competing in their first meet as a collegiate athletes, took eighth and 15th respectively in the long jump. Standokes hit 5.39m while Phillips lept 5.15m. Kaylee Jimboy and Avery Russell, also freshmen, debuted for the Bronchos in the long jump. Jimboy's 4.86-meter mark put her in 21st while Russell landed a 4.63m to come in 26th.

Jill Hagan rounded out the top-10 performances on the weekend for Central Oklahoma. Hagan, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., finished seventh in the 600-yard race with a time of 1:27.69. Katie Cease wasn't far behind, finishing 16th with a time of 1:29.46.

Central Oklahoma has officially opened its indoor season, and will now wait near six weeks for its next event. The Crimson & Gold Invite, as well as Friday's Boo Rogers Combined Events, are the only meets on the schedule in the month of December. UCO hosts on Saturday, Jan. 20, the UCO Invitational in Norman, Okla.
