UCO Claims Tourney Title

Wesley Jackson
OKLAHOMA CITY (March 24) – Freshman Wesley Jackson's even-par back nine sparked Central Oklahoma to a five-shot win in the Broncho Invitational sponsored by RCB Bank at Gaillardia Country Club here Tuesday.

The Bronchos had a final-round 310 in windy conditions on the rugged 7,255-yard, par-72 layout to finish with a 596 total in the two-day, 36-hole event.  Central Missouri was second at 601, followed by Missouri Southern (605), Southwestern Oklahoma (607) and Southern Nazarene (609).

Jackson finished with a 75 to lead UCO, which picked up its fifth win in eight tournaments this year.  The Bronchos also got a 77 from Russ Purser, 78 from Logan Gray, 80 from Alexander Hughes and 81 from Eric Kline.

"The golf course won today," head coach Pat Bates said.  "It was really tough out there with some of the pin placements and the wind, but we came out with a good win.  Welsey had a great back nine for us when we really needed it."

Jackson made the turn at three-over 39, but rebounded strong on the final nine.  The rookie offset two bogeys with birdies on the par-4 11th and 16th holes before making consecutive pars on the last two holes to finish with his even-par 36.

Purser ended up tied for second in the individual standings with a 145 total after his closing 77.  He made the turn at two-over 38 and birdied No. 18 to come in with a 39.

The Bronchos travel to Miami Beach, Fla. next Monday and Tuesday for the Buccaneer Invitational.
