EDMOND (Sept. 14) –
Gabi Bochus punched in a shot from point-blank range with 3:34 remaining to lift Central Oklahoma past Upper Iowa 1-0 Sunday afternoon in a fiercely contested defensive battle at Tom Thompson Field.

Bochus, who entered the game for the first time just minutes earlier, took a short pass from Elle Aston on the right side of the goal and barely got the shot inside the post for the game-winner.

The Bronchos had to survive some tense moments the rest of the way, but goalkeeper Brandi Bartley made the last of her six saves with 1:24 left and UCO held on for its third straight win.

It was the final non-conference contest for the Bronchos (3-1), who start Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday night at Northeastern State.

"That was a really good win for us and we battled hard the whole way," head coach Mike Cook said.  "We had some scoring chances that we couldn't capitalize on, but our defense was good and Gabi hit a big shot at the end."

Quinn Tookey once again led UCO's defensive efforts as the junior standout stymied UIU scoring ace Aimee Wronski throughout the game.  Wronski had 15 goals and six assists last year -- including both scores in a 2-1 win over the Bronchos -- but she was limited to three shots by Tookey's aggressive play.

Bartley also came up big for UCO with five second-half saves, including a sensational stop with just under eight minutes left when she barely managed to tip a shot with one hand to keep the game scoreless.

The Bronchos outshot UIU 12-10 and was unable to score despite dominating the early stages of the second half.  Kenzie Sublett had the best scoring chance for UCO during that span, but her shot from 10 feet away was smothered at the net.
