EDMOND (April 15) – Central Oklahoma rested its starters against Hillsdale Baptist and still scored 30 runs as seven pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
"It was nice to be able to give some guys some at bats who work hard despite not getting to play," head coach Dax Leone said. "This shows how deep of a team we really are and we will need those guys to be sharp to make a deep postseason run."
The Bronchos scored in every inning and really put it out of reach with a 12-run sixth inning after entering that frame with an 18-0 cushion. UCO scored 30 runs on 28 hits -- both season highs -- and had 11 doubles among its 14 extra-base hits.
Dylan Raper led the onslaught, going 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple and six runs batted in, while Jared Sterling went 4-for-5 with four doubles and four RBI. Tyler Hatcher also went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and five runs batted in and Ethan Elroy also homered for the Bronchos.
Four of UCO's top five hitters did not play and Sterling, Hatcher and Elroy came into the game combined for 11 hits and 11 RBI. That trio went 11-for-15 with 12 RBI against the Saints.
Seven different pitchers threw one inning for the Bronchos and combined to shutout the Saints on two hits, while walking three and striking out 10. Landon Hallam was credited with the win and improved to 3-1.
The Bronchos travel to Joplin, Mo. to face Missouri Southern in a four-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
