Bronchos Fall In Opener At Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma lost 9-5 at Missouri Southern Thursday in Game 1 of the three-game MIAA series.
 
UCO is now 16-17 on the season with a 7-12 record in the MIAA. Missouri Southern improved to 21-11 overall and 16-6 in league play. Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday.
 
Danny Satterlee got the start for UCO but took the loss after exiting in the fourth inning. The Bronchos were down 1-0 after one but led 3-1 in the second and 4-1 in the third. Southern tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the third and then went ahead 6-4 in the fourth as the host Lions chased Central's starting right-hander.
 
Satterlee struck out two batters. He gave up six runs on eight hits and a pair of walks. With one out in the fourth, Zack Hudspeth came on in relief and threw 2 1/3. He gave up one run on four hits and had one strikeout.
 
UCO got one run back and trailed 6-5 in the fifth. Tristan Wittau came on with two outs in the sixth and he gave up two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Chase Yarger got the final two outs of the game with a pair of groundouts on five pitches.
 
Trevor Rowe led UCO at the plate with a home run and a double. Colton Ayres and Luke Stout both had two hits including one double each. Carson Taylor was the fourth Bronchos with two hits. Haden O'Toole and Caleb Castle also had one hit each.
 
Castle walked to leadoff the second inning and Rowe followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead. Stout got on with a single after that and moved up to second when Kade Sheldon's sacrifice bunt attempt led to an error. Noah Smallwood then laid down a sac-bunt of his own and put two runners in scoring position.
 
Ayres was up next and singled to right to score Stout and give the Bronchos a 3-1 lead. Sheldon made it 4-1 in the third with a sac-fly, scoring O'Toole, who led off the inning with a single.
 
UCO scored on another sac-fly in the fifth when Smallwood flied out to right field to score Rowe, who led off the inning with a double to left center. His run made it 6-5.
 
Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern will play Game 2 on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by Game 3 Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos are home next week to face Northeastern State in Game 2 of that series and Newman for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 10 at Wendell Simmons Field.
