UCO Evens The Series In Joplin

Bronchos Win 9-6 Friday To Setup Saturday Rubber Match

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Southern 9-6 Friday afternoon to even the MIAA series. Game 3 for the series is Saturday at 1 p.m.

UCO improved to 17-17 on the season with the win and is now 8-12 in the MIAA. Southern is 21-12 overall and 16-7 in league play.

The Bronchos jumped out to a big 6-0 lead Friday, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. Central scored another in the fifth and two in the seventh and then held on through a late rally as Southern scored the game's final four runs.

Drake Lee's first-inning home run sparked the hot start for the Bronchos. The senior was in the designated hitter spot Friday and with two outs in the top of the first he took a 2-2 pitch out of the park to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead. Carson Taylor and Trevor Rowe followed with doubles and the latter got UCO a 2-0 lead.

It was 4-0 in the second. Elijah Alexander, who went 3-for-5 Friday, reached on an error to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a single from Colton Ayres, then scored on a sacrifice-fly from Kade Sheldon. Lee was back up in the inning with two on and two outs and he delivered an RBI single to right field that score Ayres for the 4-0 lead.

To make it 6-0, Caleb Castle's one-out walk in the third was followed by an Alexander single and an Ayres walk. Sheldon hit another sac-fly to score Castle and make it 5-0. Alexander and Ayres followed with a double steal and Alexander gave the Bronchos a 6-0 lead.

Alexander hit an RBI single in the fifth to score Rowe, who ledoff with a double. That made it 7-2. Haden O'Toole hit a two-RBI single to right center in the seventh to score Castle and Ayres and give the Bronchos a 9-2 lead.

Kamden Thompson had a strong start to give the Bronchos a boost. He struck out a pair of batters and allowed just two runs on six hits. Thompson stranded eight Southern baserunners.

Cortt Gentry came on for Thompson in the sixth and got a strikeout to end the inning. He got two more outs to start the seventh before a runner reached on an error and then a Southern single put two on base. UCO went to Brody Berlowitz at that point and he, like Gentry, also got a strikeout to end the inning. Southern would get three runs on five hits off Berlowitz over the final 2 1/3 but the Broncho closer got it done in the end.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern will play Game 3 for the series Saturday at 1 p.m. UCO is home next week to face Northeastern State on Tuesday and Newman for a three-game series beginning Friday in Edmond.
