EDMOND (March 28) – Jared Sterling took advantage windy conditions as he threw a complete game shutout to lead Central Oklahoma past Northeastern State, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
"Jared Sterling was great and we played good defense behind him," head coach Dax Leone said. "We still are not getting the timely hitting that we need, but overall you cannot do better than a win. I thought we played really solid on the defensive side of the ball."
Sterling allowed just six hits as he struck out five and walked just three. Only two Riverhawks reached third base, but Sterling worked out of trouble both times. There were runners at second and third in the fourth with one out, but Sterling got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat. Cody Begovich hit a two-out triple in the eighth but an infield pop-up ended the inning.
Robbie Hoffman drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning to provide all the run support Sterling would need. Matt Johnson drew a bases loaded walk in the second to add another run as the Bronchos continued to struggle with runners in scoring position.
The Bronchos went just 2-for-10 in scoring opportunities as they left 11 runners on bases, including loading the bases in each of the first three innings.
Wacey Henderson got one of the hits singling in the fourth to score Matt Johnson from third. Brad Lamberti rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Phillip Wilson went 2-for-4 and scored twice, while Johnson and Cesar Wong both went 2-for-3.
UCO improved to 18-7 on the year and 14-7 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, while NSU fell to 14-14 and 10-11.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
