UCO Falls To No. 7 Lady Hornets

EDMOND (Feb. 15) – Central Oklahoma missed 11 straight shots during a first-half dry spell to fall into a big hole and the Bronchos never recovered in dropping a 66-45 decision to No. 7-ranked Emporia State here Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The game was tied 9-all after a three-point play by Haley Weathers with 11:00 left in the opening half, but UCO didn't score again until a Chelsea Robinson layup at the 3:52 mark cut the Lady Hornets' lead to 23-11.

The Bronchos never got closer than 10 the rest of the game en route to losing for the seventh straight time, falling to 10-13 overall and 5-11 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. ESU improved to 23-2 and 14-2.

UCO had its worst shooting game of the season, hitting just 24.5 percent (13-of-53) of its field goal tries, including a mere 6.3 percent from 3-point range (1-of-16).

Julia Mason was the long player in double figures for the Bronchos, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. Weathers added seven points.

UCO overcame its early scoring drought to get within 10 (25-15) with 2:26 left in the half on Julia Mason's driving layup, but the Lady Hornets scored the final four points to take a 29-15 cushion into intermission.

ESU made three straight 3-pointers early in the second half in opening up a 22-point lead at 43-21 with 15:28 remaining, though the Bronchos battled back to with an 11-2 run.

Jill Bryan started that spurt with a 3-pointer and Weathers ended it with back-to-back layups to get UCO within 13 (45-32) at the 10:43 mark and it was still a 13-point deficit at 47-34 following two Olivia Mason free throws with 9:00 remaining.

But the Bronchos could get no closer and ESU soon pushed its lead back to 20 before coasting in.
