UCO Takes Sting Out of Hornets

Box Score

EDMOND (Nov. 1) –
Allison Barr had two kills and a block during a 9-1 fourth-set run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to close out Emporia State for its sixth straight win Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

UCO turned a 6-6 tie into a 14-7 lead behind the Barr-led surge and went on to finish off a 25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13 victory to complete a home-and-home season sweep of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Hornets.

The Bronchos improved to 25-4 on the season and 14-4 in the league, their most wins since going 32-7 in 2007.  ESU fell to 12-11 and 8-10.

"We were tired and didn't play particularly well," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team knocked off No. 10-ranked Washburn in five exhausting sets Friday night.  "Offensively we made a lot of mistakes, but we served the ball well and played pretty good defense."

The Bronchos had nine service aces while also collecting 10 team blocks.

Barbara Jackson led UCO with 15 kills, nine digs and four total blocks, while Madison King had nine kills and Barr seven along with three blocks.

Juliette Smith contributed six total blocks and defensive ace Whitney Gifford had another strong outing with 34 digs to go with three aces.  Carissa Ophus chipped in 12 digs and two aces.

The Bronchos jumped on top 5-0 in the opening set only to see ESU come back to take an 11-8 lead.  UCO went in front for good at 22-21 on a King kill and the freshman outside hitter ended the set with another laser shot to make it 25-22.

The Bronchos spurted to a 6-1 lead in the second set behind a pair of Katy Davis aces and never trailed, but the Hornets got back in it by taking the third set.

It was close early in the fourth set when Barr's spike at the net broke a 6-6 deadlock and sparked the big run that put UCO in control.  Jackson had five kills and Barr three in the final set.

The Bronchos go on the road for two conference matches next week before returning home Nov. 11 to host Southwest Baptist.
