Bronchos Trick No. 10 Washburn

Box Score

EDMOND (Oct. 31) –
Barbara Jackson supplied all the tricks during a sensational Halloween night performance that carried Central Oklahoma to a stunning five-set upset of No. 10-ranked Washburn Friday at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos never trailed in winning the final two sets to pull out a thrilling 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12 triumph and avenge a four-set road loss to the Ichabods a month ago while also knocking off their third top-15 team of the season.

Jackson was the catalyst throughout, finishing with a career-high 31 kills in 97 exhausting attacks – the second-highest match total in school history – to go along with 14 digs, eight total blocks and two assists.

There were plenty of other heroes for UCO, which improved to 24-4 on the season and 13-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play heading into Saturday's 7 p.m. home match against Emporia State.

Setter Katy Davis passed out a career-best 55 assists while adding a career-high 22 digs and three kills in leading the offensive attack.  Libero Whitney Gifford helped keep WU's potent offense at bay with 40 digs, several of the acrobatic variety, and Sabetha Young delivered 15 key kills.

The Bronchos also got nine kills and five blocks from Allison Barr, six blocks and five kills from Juliette Smith, 15 digs from Carissa Ophus and 10 digs from Mikayla Bangasser.

"That was a great, great win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Barbara was unbelievable the whole match, but we got big-time contributions from a lot of players.  We played really well, especially in the last two sets."

UCO used a balanced attack in taking the fourth set to tie the match, getting four kills from Barr and three apiece from Jackson, Young and Madison King.

Jackson gave the Bronchos a lead they would never relinquish in the fifth set with a solo block on Washburn's opening serve and she added a kill moments later to make it 3-0.  UCO led 13-8 when the Ichobads tried to rally, getting within 14-12 before Jackson finished off the match with her sixth kill of the set.

WU used a late rally to steal the first set, but Jackson had nine kills and Grifford nine digs in the second as the Bronchos rebounded to tie it.  The Ichabods built a 14-3 lead and held off a UCO rally in taking the third set.
