Bronchos Top Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. (Oct. 28) –
Barbara Jackson and Bonnie Vernon had two kills apiece during a 10-1 run that sparked a crucial third-set win and carried the Bronchos to a key road victory over Missouri Southern here Tuesday night.
 
The Lions jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the third set after the two teams split the first two before Jackson and Vernon led the rally that lifted UCO to a 25-16, 24-26 25-20, 25-22 victory as the Bronchos improved to 23-4 on the season and 12-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
 
"We did a good job of staying calm when we got behind and pulled out a great win on the road," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We played well and did what we needed to do."
 
The Bronchos looked in trouble after falling into its 12-5 third-set hole, but Vernon started the 10-1 scoring spurt with a pair of kills and Jackson ended it with two straight to give UCO a 15-13 lead it would never relinquish.
 
Jackson followed her third-set heroics with three kills early in the fourth set that helped stake the Bronchos to a quick 6-1 lead as UCO went on to close out the match.
 
The junior outside hitter ended up with a match-high 18 kills in addition to making 11 digs.  Vernon finished with 15 kills and just one error in 30 attacks for a sizzling .487 attack percentage, while Juliette Smith had 11 kills with five blocks.
 
Sabetha Young chipped in eight kills, Allison Barr had six kills and five blocks, Katy Davis dished out 49 assists and Whitney Gifford contributed a match-high 25 digs.
 
The Bronchos return home for two conference matches this weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. showdown Friday against No. 10-ranked Washburn.
