Bronchos Knock Off Missouri Western

Box Score

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Oct. 25) –
Juliette Smith keyed a third-set scoring run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to knock off Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association co-leader Missouri Western here Saturday night.

UCO avenged a four-set home loss to the Griffons a month ago with a 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24 victory, improving to 22-4 on the season and 11-4 in the league.  MWSU fell to 18-5 and 12-3.

Smith had two kills and two blocks during a 14-3 spurt that turned a 5-3 deficit into a 17-8 lead in the third set and the Bronchos went on to win that set before closing out the match.

"That was a huge road win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We came out ready to play and did a great job staying aggressive throughout the match."

Smith finished with 12 kills and just two errors in 19 attacks for a .526 hitting percentage while adding six total blocks.  Barbara Jackson had a team-high 17 kills with five blocks, Bonnie Vernon added 11 kills and Sabetha Young hit .409 with nine kills and no errors in 22 attacks

Katy Davis directed the UCO attack flawlessly, distributing 51 assists in addition to making 10 digs.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set after jumping out to a 4-0 lead behind a Mallory Fox service ace and two Smith kills, though UCO had to fend off a Griffon rally before Smith finally ended it with another kill.

MWSU came back to tie the match with the second-set win, but the Bronchos answered back in the decisive third set as Smith sparked the rally that turned the 5-3 deficit into a 17-8 lead.

UCO led 11-7 in the fourth set before the Griffons came back with a 9-1 run to take a 16-12 lead and it was a 21-18 deficit before the Bronchos rallied.

Central tied it at 23-all on a Jackson kill, went ahead 25-24 on a MWSU service error and closed out the match on Jackson's second ace of the match.

The Bronchos go back on the road Tuesday, traveling to Joplin, Mo. to take on Missouri Southern.
