EDMOND (Oct. 18) –
Bonnie Vernon had 15 kills and Central Oklahoma bounced back from a stunning loss earlier in the day with a three-set sweep of Bacone Saturday evening at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos were upset by Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Fort Hays State in an afternoon match (25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 29-27) before bouncing back to rout the Warriors 25-12, 25-18, 25-14.

Vernon led the way against Bacone with 15 kills and just one error in 31 attacks for a sizzling .452 hitting percentage.  Juliette Smith added eight kills, Madison King six and Erika Warren five as UCO coasted to its 20th win of the season, improving to 20-4.

"We didn't come out ready to play against Fort Hays and it cost us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a very disappointing loss, but we did a good job coming back and taking care of business in the second match."

The Bronchos had no trouble with Bacone and trailed only once in the entire match, that coming briefly early in the second set.

UCO struggled early in the first match against FHSU and dropped the first two sets to fall into a big hole.

The Bronchos, who swept the first meeting between the two a month ago in Hays, Kan., bounced back to take the third set as Jackson had seven kills and Smith five.

UCO took a series of three-point leads in the fourth set, but the Tigers battled back and the two waged a fierce battle down the stretch as the momentum went back-and-forth.

The Bronchos appeared ready to force a fifth set after taking a 27-26 lead, but FHSU scored the next two points to complete the upset.

Jackson finished with 20 kills, while Smith and Sabetha Young had 11 apiece.

Whitney Gifford was sensational on defense for UCO in finishing with 46 digs, the third-best single-match performance in school history, and Katy Davis had a career-high 55 assists.

The Bronchos go on the road for three straight conference matches before returning home Oct. 31 to host Washburn.
