Bronchos Fall To No. 7 UNK

Box Score

EDMOND (Oct. 17) –
No. 7-ranked Nebraska-Kearney displayed too much balance and firepower for Central Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

Three players had double-digit kills for the Lopers, who finished with a 65-42 advantage in kills in handing UCO a 25-22, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback.

The Bronchos fell out of a tie for the league lead in dropping to 19-3 on the season and 9-3 in MIAA play.  UNK improved to 18-2 overall and stayed atop the conference standings with Central Missouri, Missouri Western and Washburn at 10-2.

"We made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a quality team like that," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team upset the Lopers on the road a month ago.  "We had some good stretches, but we weren't nearly as consistent as we needed to be and that cost us."

Barbara Jackson paced UCO with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Sabetha Young had nine kills and six total blocks.  Bonnie Vernon added six kills and Allison Barr four kills and five assisted blocks.

Whitney Gifford made 24 digs against the hard-hitting Lopers, with Mikayla Bangasser adding 13 and Carissa Ophus 12.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in each of the first two sets only to see UNK rally to take both in grabbing control of the match.

UCO took another early three-point lead in the third set at 4-1, but the Lopers came back to tie it at 8-all.  Joanna Huckabee broke that deadlock with a kill down the middle and the Bronchos pulled away from there.

UNK quickly quelled any hopes of a comeback by getting in front 3-0 in the fourth set and UCO could never catch up.

The Bronchos are back in action Saturday with two home matches, taking on conference foe Fort Hays State at 2 p.m. and intrastate rival Bacone at 6:30.
