EDMOND (April 12) –
Kacie Edwards came through with a clutch run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a two-run rally that lifted Central Oklahoma to a 5-4 second-game win and doubleheader sweep of Emporia State here Friday.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos won the opener 3-1 behind Kalynn Schrock's complete-game four-hitter and then came from behind twice in the final innings to stun the Hornets in the nightcap of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association twinbill.

UCO trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the eighth of the second game, but loaded the bases with consecutive one-out singles by Tori Collet, Kaylee Brunson and Ally DziadulaDevyn Frazier's infield single scored Collet with the tying run and Edwards followed with a long drive off the left field fence for the game-winner.

The Bronchos improved to 29-7 overall and 13-1 in the conference with the sweep while winning for the ninth straight time.  ESU fell to 26-11 and 13-5.

“We stayed in there and battled that second game and pulled out a great win,” said head coach Genny Stidham, whose team is back in action Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Washburn.  “We had some girls come through when we really needed it in both games today and we beat a really good team.”

UCO was down 3-1 going into the sixth inning of the nightcap before pushing across a run on Sam Cool's bases-loaded walk, though the Bronchos left the bases loaded.

It was the same situation in the seventh, with Hayley Hudson drawing a two-out, bases-loaded free pass to tie the game before UCO again stranded three runners.

ESU strung together three straight singles to move in front 4-3 in the top of the eighth, but the Bronchos were equal to the task in their final at bat.

Frazier led an 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate along with making a pair of outstanding plays from her left field position.  The Bronchos also got two hits apiece from Dziadula, Edwards, Collet and Brunson.

UCO overcame a 1-0 deficit in the opener with a three-run volley in the fourth inning, breaking loose for five of its seven hits in that frame.

Edwards and Natalie Workman led off with back-to-back singles and Hayley Hudson's double to left-center field scored pinch-runner Hannah Justus to tie the game.  Sam Cool followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Bronchos on top and Collet's RBI single made it 3-1.

Schrock benefitted from some outstanding defense by Dziadula at shortstop and Frazier in left field en route to her 14th complete-game outing of the season.  The junior left-hander, who also won the second game in relief, is now 18-3 on the season.
