UCO Gets Past Patriots

Julia Shviadok
EDMOND (April 2) – Julia Shviadok picked up the clinching win in the final home match of her stellar career to lift Central Oklahoma to a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Dallas Baptist here Monday.

The No. 26-ranked Bronchos pulled out two crucial wins in doubles play to take a 2-1 lead and then stayed in front of the No. 32 Patriots by splitting the six singles matches, with Shviadok's 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Leah Rutt the clincher.

It was the final home match for Shviadok and fellow seniors Elizabeta Abramovic and Anna Kochigina and they made the most of it in ending DBU's 10-match winning streak.

It was the eighth win in nine outings for the Bronchos, now 10-5 on the year.  UCO finishes the regular season with six straight road matches, starting with this weekend's trip to Maryville, Mo. to face Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri.

"We lost a close 5-4 match to Dallas Baptist last year, so it was important for us to get this match,” UCO coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey said.  “But we also understand the importance of each match that we have left as we try to make to the national tournament.

“I knew doubles would be the key for us to win today and I'm glad we were able to get two out of the three.  It was such a long, tough match and I am proud of my girls for overcoming the heat and finding the way to win."

Kochigina teamed with Rose Cabato for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, while Anto Rossini and Sowmya Pulumati prevailed in a tense 9-7 battle at No. 3 to give UCO the lead.

Shviadok, Rossini and Cabato prevailed in singles play for the Bronchos, with Cabato coming back from a 6-1 first-set loss to win the next two 6-2, 6-3.
