UCO Knocks Off No. 12 Washburn

Bronchos Win 4-3 Saturday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma upset No. 12 Washburn Saturday afternoon at Broncho Courts with a 4-3 win in the MIAA clash.

UCO improved to 11-2 with the win and is now 3-0 in the MIAA. Washburn is 10-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.

"That was a big win for us," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We lost two matches in three sets that could've went a different way. I'm really proud of the team for this one. Now we need to carry that forward because there are some more big matches coming up."

Saturday's win was the sixth in a row for the Bronchos. In 11 wins this season, UCO has won the doubles point 10 times. And that was no different against Washburn.

Ayaka Koga and Anika Ouwejan won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles before 18th-ranked Mei Hasegawa and Pete Komada won 6-3 at No. 1 to get the point. Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo added a 6-1 win at No. 2 for a clean sweep.

Taking the doubles point in 10 of 11 matches, UCO has swept all three positions eight times.

As play moved to singles, the match was tied after Washburn won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 over Koga. But the Bronchos followed with a run.

The top two matches featured four ranked players. No. 54 Komada won 6-4, 6-3 over Washburn's 47th-ranked Riko Konno. Then No. 30 Hasegawa picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Washburn's 15th-ranked Renske Ubachs. That stretched the lead to 3-1 UCO.

Washburn got another back at No. 3, topping Ouwejan in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. But Soo would clinch the match soon after that with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles that gave the Bronchos a 4-2 lead. Washburn added one more at No. 4 singles, with Yurchenko suffering her first loss of the season 6-3, 5-7, 0-1 (12-14).

Central Oklahoma has six matches left in the regular season, four on the road. Two big tests are up next with UCO playing at Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western in two weeks. The Bronchos return home April 16 & 18 against Northeastern State and Arkansas Fort Smith.
