Central Falls Short At Mo. West

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma's six-game win streak came to an end Saturday with a narrow 4-3 loss at Missouri Western in MIAA play.

UCO is 11-3 on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have a five-game and six-game win streak on the season and will try to start anew Sunday against Northwest Missouri. That match will also be played in St. Joseph.

Central got out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Mei Hasegawa and Pete Komada won 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 in a nationally ranked matchup. UCO's top duo is 16th in the latest ITA poll and MWSU's is ranked 46th.

Anika Ouwejan and Ayaka Koga won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles and Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo won 7-5 at No. 3 to get the Bronchos the early 1-0 lead.

Hasegawa, also ranked in the latest ITA Singles poll at No. 22, gave the Bronchos a 2-0 lead with a quick win at the top spot in the lineup. She won 6-2, 6-3. Missouri Western then got on the board and tied the match with wins at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1) over Komada and No. 3 (6-4, 7-6 (7-4)) over Ouwejan.

Yurchenko put UCO back in front with a three-set win at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Central needed one win in the final two matches to keep the streak alive.

Koga won her first set and Soo lost her first set. But Koga lost the second and Soo won the second. Both would go down to third sets. Unfortunately for the Bronchos on Saturday, Koga lost 6-1 and Soo 6-2 and Missouri Western earned the final two points and the 4-3 win in the match.
