EDMOND (March 2) --
Central Oklahoma split a pair of matches in its home debut Friday, dropping a tough 6-3 decision to No. 14-ranked Cameron before bouncing back with an 8-1 rout of East Central.

The Bronchos, now 2-3 on the season, host future conference rival Southwest Baptist at 9 a.m. Saturday on the UCO Courts to end their busy weekend schedule.

Rose Cabato and Anto Rossini earned a doubles win against the Aggies, while Elizabeta Abramovic and Sowmya Pulumati prevailed in singles.  Abramovic pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 victory over CU's Julie Puckhaber, No. 3 in the South Central Regional singles rankings.

"We always have very intense matches against Cameron and today was no exception,” UCO coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey said. “Even though we had a few opportunities in a couple of matches and didn't take advantage of them, I felt that the girls were fighting hard through the wind and cold conditions.

“I am so proud of Elizabeta for beating one of the top three players in the region and Sowmya had a great performance as a freshman."

UCO had no trouble with the Tigers, sweeping the three doubles matches before taking five of the six singles bouts.

Abramovic prevailed in a tense three-set battle at No. 1 and the other four singles winners cruised in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 blanking by Cabato at No. 5.

"It was a good match and I am glad that we were able to end the day on positive note,” Nikitina-Helvey said.  “Hopefully we can get some good rest and have a great performance against Southwest Baptist."
