Central Oklahoma Wins 4-3 Over Northwest Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma beat Northwest Missouri 4-3 Sunday in the MIAA to bounce back into the win column and earn a crucial weekend split.

UCO is 12-3 on the season and 4-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos had a six-game win streak snapped Saturday in a close 4-3 setback. Missouri Western (14-2, 5-0) now holds sole possession of first place in the league standings. Northwest Missouri (14-3, 5-1) suffered its first loss this weekend after UCO did on Saturday. Washburn (13-3, 4-1) is also in the tight race for the league title. Central beat Washburn two weeks ago in Edmond.

In Sunday's match for Central, the 15th of the season, UCO won the doubles point for the 13th time. The Bronchos swept all three positions for the 10th time, including the sixth consecutive match. UCO is a combined 15-0 in doubles contests in MIAA competition.

UCO's No. 16 ranked doubles team of Mei Hasegawa and Pete Komada started the day with a 6-2 win at No. 1 to improve to 12-2 on the season with their sixth straight win. Hui Soo and Karyna Yurchenko then won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles and Ayaka Koga and Anika Ouwejan won 6-4 at No. 2 to make it a clean sweep.

In singles play, Hasegawa and Komada got UCO a quick 3-0 lead. Hasegawa won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 before Komada won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 to put the Bronchos within a point of clinching.

Moments later, Yurchenko clinched it. She won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in a three-set battle at No. 4 singles to give the Bronchos the 4-0 lead and the match. Northwest won at No. 3, 5, and 6 to salvage the points.

UCO plays its final two home matches of the season next weekend, hosting Northeastern State and Arkansas Fort Smith in Edmond. The Bronchos finish the regular season on the road at Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney April 24-25.
