Bronchos Win Again

Eli Abramovic
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 15) -- Central Oklahoma wrapped up the regular season in style here Friday, cruising past future conference rival Southwest Baptist 7-2 for its eighth consecutive win.

The Bronchos are in their final year in the Lone Star Conference and will play as NCAA Division II independents next season before joining SBU and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012.

UCO had no trouble with the Bearcats, sweeping all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead before claiming four of the six singles bouts to notch its 10th win in 11 outings and improve to 17-8 on the year.

"We picked up a really good win against one of the top teams in the MIAA," UCO coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey said.  "I am so proud of how my team has came together this last month.  They have played so great, displaying such an outstanding work ethic and passion.

"It's such a wonderful group of girls and we all enjoy spending time together on and off a court. We're going to take the weekend off and then start preparing for the conference tournament."

Eli Abramovic, Lacy Caldwell, Anto Rossini and Meredith Marney all swept their matches against SBU.

Caldwell and Rossini teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles before going on to win their singles matches.  Abramovic won at No. 2 singles in addition to combining with Julia Shviadok for an 8-5 doubles triumph, while Marney came out on top at No. 6 singles and in No. 3 doubles with Rose Cabato.

UCO now points to the LSC Championships, which will be held at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center next Friday and Saturday.
