OKLAHOMA CITY (April 23) – Rose Cabato and Anto Rossini sparked Central Oklahoma to an opening-round win over Cameron before the Bronchos fell to defending champion Abilene Christian on the first day of the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Championship here Friday.
Cabato and Rossini keyed UCO's 5-4 triumph over the Aggies, teaming up for a key doubles win before both rolled to singles victories. The No. 24-ranked Bronchos then fell to two-time defending champion and No. 7-rated Abilene Christian 5-0 in the semifinals.
Cabato and Rossini rolled to an 8-1 rout at No. 3 doubles against Cameron as UCO took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches and the freshmen followed with straight-set singles wins to keep the Bronchos in front.
Cabato claimed a 6-2, 7-6 triumph at No. 6 singles, while Rossini won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. Lacy Caldwell had the clinching win, prevailing 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, with Julia Shviadok and Eli Abramovic taking an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles for UCO's other point.
The Bronchos lost all three doubles bouts against ACU, with the Wildcats winning at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to wrap up the match.
“We played pretty well against Cameron and won some big points when we needed to,” UCO coach Natalya Smith said. “We didn't play our best against Abilene and made a lot of mistakes which they took advantage of.”
The Bronchos, now 15-6 on the year, are expected to earn a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament when that 64-team field is announced next week.
