Bronchos Fall to WT

Box Score

CANYON, Texas (Dec. 18) –
Poor shooting and tough defense resulted in a low-scoring loss for No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma here Saturday night.

The Bronchos shot a season-low 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field -- including just 21.4 percent (6-of-28) from 3-point range -- in dropping a 67-60 Lone Star Conference crossover match to unbeaten West Texas A&M (10-0).  It was UCO's lowest-scoring game since the 2005-06 season.

“West Texas did a good job of slowing us down and we missed a lot of open shots that we normally make,” head coach Terry Evans said.  “It's a disappointing loss, but that was a good team we played and we just have to move on.”

Dauntae Williams led the Bronchos, scoring a game-high 23 points while adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals.  UCO also got 12 points from Tyler Phillips and 10 off the bench from Carl Curry.

The Bronchos led only a couple of times, the last coming four minutes into the contest when Shane Carroll's layup made it 8-7. UCO missed its next 12 shots, but only fell behind by six (14-8) and it was a 14-13 game when Tyler Phillips converted a three-point play at the 7:40 mark.

WTAMU came back with a 12-3 run to push its lead to 10 at 26-16 with 4:44 remaining and the Buffs took a nine-point cushion (34-25) into halftime.

UCO's deficit grew to 14 on three occasions early in the second half, but the Bronchos tried to rally and got within seven at 46-39 with 10:13 left to play on a Curry 3-pointer.

But WTAMU responded with six unanswered points to re-establish control at 52-39 with 7:10 remaining and the closest UCO got the rest of the way was the final seven-point margin.

The Bronchos, now 10-2 on the season, resume league crossover action Monday at Eastern New Mexico.
