Bronchos Overpower Lions In Joplin

Central Oklahoma Beats Missouri Southern 87-79 In MIAA Road Contest

JOPLIN, Mo. – Matthew Willenborg's career day led Central Oklahoma to an 87-79 MIAA road win at Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon when the junior forward scored 33 points.

After being named MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday, Willenborg scored a career-high for the third time this season on Saturday in Joplin. He went 12-for-21 from the floor and made all eight of his free-throws and one 3-pointer. He also had seven rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals.

"Matt was great today and he has been for us for a while now," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We need him to step up and he does. It's been fun to see his growth and it was fun to see today. And we needed it too."

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern traded the lead five times on Saturday. The last was when Willenborg gave the Bronchos a 54-53 lead with 13:03 to play. That started a 10-2 run that included four from Willenborg and six from Josh Nwankwo, who hit two 3-pointers in the two-minute stretch.

UCO led by as many as 13 points soon after, 72-59, with 4:46 to play and grinded out the final five minutes for the win.

Nwankwo added 26 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals before fouling out after 32 minutes of play. He was 9 of 22 from the floor and went 4-for-7 from behind the 3-point line and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

The Bronchos hit 22 of 27 shots from the stripe on Saturday.

UCO also got nine points from Jack Robinson, who pulled down 13 rebounds. Marcus Zeigler Jr. added six, Ben Averitt scored four, and Parker Hannah and Jayden Garces scored three points each. Chase Sucharda chipped in two points and Trey Tuck added one.

Central Oklahoma shot 45.3 percent from the floor in the game, making 29 of 64 total shots. The Bronchos were 38.9 percent from behind the arc, making 7 of 18 from deep.

UCO continues a five-game road swing with another MIAA road matchup next Thursday, Dec. 11, at Rogers State.
