EDMOND (Jan. 14) –
Lopsided losses in the first two weights set the tone early and Central Oklahoma was simply no match for Nebraska-Kearney Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

In what was suppose to be a showdown between the two teams tied for third in the NCAA Division II rankings, the visiting Lopers opened with consecutive major decisions and won eight of the 10 matches to breeze past the Bronchos, 31-6.

UCO was without two starters – 141-pounder Scott Berens and heavyweight All-American Dustin Finn – and was sluggish from the outset.  Ed Jackson (157) and Derrick Adkins (165) had the lone wins for the Bronchos, who lost two last-second matches and gave up four bonus decisions in falling to 3-4 on the year.

“That was as bad a performance as we've had in a long, long time,” UCO coach David James said.  “We didn't have any intensity and we got outhustled and outwrestled in every match. It's unacceptable and we're going to do whatever it takes to get it corrected.”

The Bronchos were stunned in the first match of the night when UNK's Danny Luttrell dominated fifth-ranked Casy Rowell en route to a 13-4 major decision and fourth-rated Joey Morrison followed with a 10-2 rout of No. 5 Trison Graham to quickly make it 8-0.

UNK won the next two weights to go up 14-0, with sixth-ranked T.J. Hepburn scoring a takedown and near-fall in the final 15 seconds to knock off No. 3 Colby Robinson 4-3 at 149.

UCO finally got on the board at 157 as Jackson had four takedowns in a 9-6 victory and Adkins barely held off Drew Comito's last-second takedown try to earn a 3-2 win at 165.

But the Lopers came back to take the final four weights, including a 3-1 win by Justin McKain over Jarrett Edison at 197 on McKain's takedown with four seconds remaining.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday, traveling to Grand Prairie, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. UCO will take on New Mexico Highlands at 10 a.m., Newman at 4 p.m. and an NAIA all-star team at 8 p.m.
