EDMOND (Sept. 27) – Kristen Wilson's easy kill at the net on match-point capped a Central Oklahoma comeback that lifted the Bronchos to a thrilling five-set Lone Star Conference win over Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.
The Savage Storm were poised for their first-ever win over UCO after taking a 14-12 lead in the final set, but the Bronchos rallied to pull out a 17-15 triumph on Wilson's slam dunk to cap a 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 12-25, 17-15 victory.
It was the fourth straight win for UCO, which improved to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in the league with its 14th consecutive home win. SOSU, now 0-20 against the Bronchos, fell to 10-8 and 0-4.
“It was a great match that could have gone either way, but we made the plays down the stretch we needed to make,” head coach Jeff Boyland said. “It was a battle all the way and we never backed down, even when things didn't look so good in that fifth set.”
SOSU led most of the way in the deciding set, taking a 10-6 lead and then putting UCO on the verge of defeat with a 14-12 advantage and the serve. But the Bronchos staved off the Savage Storm, getting a kill from Jessica Legako and a block from Legako and Meaghan Wedberg to tie it.
An attack error gave UCO a 15-14 lead, with SOSU tying it at 15-all before the Bronchos scored the final two points to end the suspense.
Wilson finished with a game-high 21 kills and added 14 digs, while Legako had 13 kills and three blocks and Kim Iten 12 kills and 12 digs. Wedberg handed out a season-high 51 assists, Madi Serratt came off the bench to supply six crucial kills in the final two sets and Sarah Niles had a match-high 22 digs.
