Central Oklahoma Kicks Off MIAA Play This Weekend

Bronchos Visits Missouri Western, Host Northwest Missouri

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma begins MIAA play this weekend with a pair of contests against Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri.
 
UCO went 3-3-0 in the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Bronchos will kickoff Friday night at MWSU in St. Joseph, Missouri before returning home to face NWMSU Sunday at 1 p.m. in Edmond.
 
In non-conference action, Central Oklahoma lost to Minnesota State, Augustana, and Midwestern State by a combined score of 5-1. But the Bronchos beat three Oklahoma schools in Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Nazarene, and Southwestern Oklahoma, and outscored those opponents 8-1.
 
Central has nine goals in six games this season, an average of 1.5 per game. The Bronchos have taken 96 shots, 16.0 per game, and have put 41 on goal. Defensively, Central has allowed six goals, 1.0 per game, and allowed opponents to take 48 total shots, 8.0 per game. Teams have put 19 shots on goal against the Bronchos.
 
Sami Allen and Sophia Gaskins each have two goals for the Bronchos, while Kaitlyn Cotton, Caleah Carter, Addison Guthrie, Camila Mujica, and Emma Nicholas all have one goal each. Allen and Cotton also have assists on the season. Allen and Carter lead the team with 15 shots taken and Allen has put eight on goal.
 
Greta Likens, Jane Lockhart, and Sheridan Ross all have one assist each as well.
 
In goal, Maddie Ortwein has played in 4 of 6 games and Stella Soderbom the other two. Both have played the full 90 in all appearances. Ortwein has 10 saves and has allowed four goals. She is 2-2-0. Soderbom has two saves and two goals allowed and is 1-1-0.
 
Cotton was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. She scored a goal and had an assist playing 180 minutes in two UCO shutouts last week.
 
Missouri Western is 3-0-2. The Griffons played a scoreless tie at Bemidji State before winning at Northern State to open the season. MWSU beat Wayne State and Maryville at home and tied SWOSU in another scoreless tie last week in St. Joe.
 
Central Oklahoma is 10-4-3 all-time against Missouri Western. The Bronchos lost 2-1 in the MIAA Championship final last November and are looking for their first win against the Griffons since 2022.
 
Northwest is 0-4-1 this season. The Bearcats also went north on opening weekend and lost to both Northern State 1-0 and Bemidji 2-1 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. NWMSU tied Maryville 1-1 in their home opener then headed back north for a 1-0 loss at Augie in Sioux Falls, S.D. Northwest Missouri hosted Pittsburg State in a non-conference match and lost 3-0.
 
Central Oklahoma is 8-4-2 against Northwest Missouri State all-time. The Bearcats are 4-0-1 in the last five matches of the series.
 
Sunday opens a four-game homestand for the Bronchos. Next weekend Rogers State and No. 12 Pitt come to Edmond. Emporia State comes to Edmond in two weeks.
