Another ITA Regional Doubles Title For UCO

Mei Hasegawa and Ayaka Koga Win ITA Central Region Doubles Championships, Advance To ITA Cup

EDMOND - Central Oklahoma won the ITA Central Region Doubles Championship for the sixth time in eight years Sunday when Mei Hasegawa and Ayaka Koga won the fall tournament at Edmond Center Court.

The duo went 5-0 this week. Sunday afternoon, following an ITA Central Region Singles Championship loss by Hasegawa, the UCO duo got to work against Augustana's Smilte Bakyte and Fernanda Sandoval. The Bronchos would take a 6-4, 6-4 victory to earn the title.

"I'm so happy for them," first-year UCO head women's tennis coach Grace Chadick said. "It was a very long tournament and a very challenging one, but the found a way to get it done. I'm proud of them for their play and happy and excited they get the chance to go to the ITA Cup."

Winners of eight ITA regionals in both singles and doubles automatically advance to the ITA Cup in Tuscaloosa, Alabama next month. At-large bids are also awarded and Hasegawa is a potential pick for the national singles tournament.

Hasegawa won two matches Thursday, one Friday and one Saturday to reach the finals. She faced off against Northwest Missouri's Polina Gontaryk. Hasegawa took the first set 6-3. Gontaryk forced a third with a 7-5 win in the second set. The NWMSU player then won 7-6 (8-6) in the third and decisive set.

The doubles championship for Central Oklahoma continues a recent trend in the Central Region. Hasegawa and Koga are the sixth team to do it in the last eight years. Koga won it last year too. Her teammate then, Pete Komada, won it two years before that with Blythe Buntrock, who won it the year before with that Nikki Boyar. Mae Canete and Christine Canete won it 2021. Boyar and Paola Landin won it in 2019.
