Central Duo Headed To ITA National Championships

Mei Hasegawa and Ayaka Koga Will Compete For National Title Next Week

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Wednesday the qualifiers and selections for the inaugural Division II Individual National Championships next month.

Mei Hasegawa and Ayaka Koga won the ITA Central Region doubles title last week in Edmond to earn a spot and Hasegawa was also selected following her runner-up finish in the singles regional championship.

The inaugural ITA Division II Individual National Championships will be held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama November 4-8 at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center. Featuring a singles field of 32 players and a doubles field of 16 teams, for both men and women, players were selected to compete by virtue of finishing as an ITA Division II Regional Champion or Finalist, or by receiving an at-large selection, which were determined and voted on by the ITA Operating Committee.

The ITA Cup previously served as the fall national championships for Division II tennis. Koga won the ITA Central Region doubles title last year too and qualified for the ITA Cup. She lost in the Round of 16 in Rome, Georgia.

Last weekend was the first time Hasegawa and Koga teamed up in doubles play and the Broncho pair went 5-0 to win the regional title.

Hasegawa is 9-2 this fall in singles play. She lost her first match of the season before winning two more at Cameron, then all three contests at Washburn to win her bracket. She won her first four matches at the ITA regional before falling in the title match.
