UCO Hosts ITA Regional Championships

Bronchos Competing For Chance To Go To ITA Cup

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma hosts the ITA Central Region Championships this week at Edmond Center Court with competition beginning Thursday morning.

"We are grateful to be able to host this event," UCO head women's tennis coach Grace Chadick said. "It's a tough event with a lot of great players and it's a long weekend of competition. But it gives us a great chance to showcase our team and to able to play at home is a plus."

The Bronchos have seven total players entered in either singles or doubles tournaments this weekend. UCO will have three singles players in the A Flight and three doubles teams in the A Flight. Both tournaments produced national qualifiers for the ITA Cup next month in Alabama.

The Central Region is made up of teams from the MIAA, the Great American Conference, and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The ITA Central Region Singles Tournament features 64 players competing for the chance to advance to the ITA Cup in Tuscaloosa, Alabama Nov. 4-6. There are 32 more players in the B Flight. The ITA Central Region Doubles tournament features 32 pairs competing to advance to Alabama. There are 16 more doubles teams in the B Flight.

Mei Hasegawa is the No. 1 overall seed in the Central Region singles tournament of 64 players. The UCO junior is making her ITA debut. She transferred to Central Oklahoma at semester last season. Hui Soo and Haley Hibbets are also playing in the A Flight singles tournament.

Milana Quick, Dilay Ata, and Anna Richter are competing in the Central Region Singles B Flight.

Hasegawa will team up with Ayaka Koga in doubles competition and the duo is the No. 2 overall seed. Koga was part of Central Oklahoma's doubles team last year that won the Regional and advanced to the ITA Cup. UCO has had the ITA Central Region doubles champion in five of the last seven years. Hibbets and Ata will also team up this weekend as will Quick and Soo.

Hasegawa is 5-1 this fall in two tournaments. She lost her first match of the season at Cameron but rebounded with two wins in the consolation round. At Washburn, she went 3-0 to take the title. Hibbets is 4-1 and has played in the finals of her flight in both fall events. She lost the final at Cameron and went 3-0 at Washburn to win that flight. Soo is 3-3 this fall.

For the Bronchos in the B Flight, Quick is 2-3 this fall, Ata is 2-2, and Richter is 1-2.

The doubles teams have been a mix. This week will be the first competition together for the three pairings.

Hasegawa is 4-2 in doubles competition this fall. Koga is 3-2. Hibbets and Ata went 1-1 together at Cameron. Hibbets went 2-1 at Washburn with Koga and Ata dropped both of her matches with Richter at Washburn. Quick is 0-3 this fall and Soo is 3-2.

If Central Oklahoma has any advancing players, the ITA Cup is on the schedule for next month in Alabama. The Bronchos will take a winter break before returning for their championship season in the Spring.
