Hasegawa, Hibbets, Win At Washburn

Bronchos Pick Up 13 Wins At Washburn Invite, Take Two Singles Titles

TOPEKA, Kan. – Mei Hasegawa and Haley Hibbets both won their respective flights this weekend at the Washburn Invite. UCO garnered xx wins in the two-day event.
 
Hasegawa, an All-American junior, went 3-0 in singles play to take the top flight. She beat Northwest Missouri's Majra Djokic (6-3, 6-1) and Missouri State's Matilde Ercoli (7-6 (7-4), 6-3) on Friday to reach the final. On Saturday, Hasegawa won 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 10-3 over Missouri Kansas City's Luciana Braga.
 
Hibbets also went 3-0 this weekend to claim her bracket. She won 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 over Southwest Baptist's Micaela Rocco Fulco, then earned a medical forfeit to advance to the final. On Saturday, Hibbets won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 over Camilla Franzin of SBU to claim the title.
 
Ayaka Koga dropped her first match on Friday, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 against UMKC's Flavia Monteverde. She retired due to injury in the consolation round.
 
Hui Soo lost her first match on Friday as well in a grueling three-set slugfest. She lost the opening set 7-6 (8-6), won the second 6-3, then lost the tiebreaker 10-7. She came back later Friday afternoon and won a three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6, over Washburn's Ruriha Miyawaki. On Saturday morning, Soo lost the consolation final to Emporia's Yuliya Klimova, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Dilay Ata lost 6-1, 6-2 to Emporia's Erin Cahill on Friday morning. She won 6-2, 7-5 over UMKS's Sarah Jukic Friday afternoon. On Saturday, Ata came up short in the consolation final, 6-0, 6-2.
 
Anna Richter played in the same bracket as Hibbets. She dropped her first match, 6-1, 6-3, to UMKC's Ella Gates. She came back Friday afternoon with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tokara Henderson of Emporia, but lost 6-3, 6-3 to SBU's Rocco Fulco.
 
Brylee Toney went 0-3 in her round-robin pool play.
 
In doubles play this weekend, Hasegawa and Soo made the final in the top bracket.
 
The duo won 6-3 over Missouri State on Friday morning, then 7-5 over Washburn on Saturday afternoon. After a quick turnaround to the final, Hasegawa and Soo lost 6-2 to another Missouri State squad.
 
Koga and Hibbets teamed up, as well as Richtar and Ata, in the second bracket. Koga and Hibbets lost 6-4 while Richtar and Ata lost 6-2 in their opening matches on Friday. Koga and Hibbets came back Saturday with two wins, beating a team from UMKC before an opponent from ESU to win the consolation final. The Emporia duo Koga and Hibbets beat in the consolation final had just knocked out Richtar and Ata in the semifinals, 6-4.
 
Milana Quick joined Toney in the third bracket and the duo lost 6-3 in their first match Friday morning. They lost 7-6 (7-4) Saturday afternoon.
 
Central Oklahoma has one more fall event on its schedule – the ITA Regional Championships. UCO is hosting the three-day tournament featuring teams from the Central Region Oct. 23-25 at Edmond Center Court.
