Another MIAA Honor For Matthew Willenborg

Central Oklahoma Junior Earns Third MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second week in a row and the third time this season, Matthew Willenborg was named MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week.

The junior forward averaged 24.0 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game, and 5.0 blocked shots per game as the Bronchos split a pair of MIAA home games at Hamilton Field House.

On Wednesday night, Willenborg scored 17 points, secured seven rebounds, and swatted six blocked shots as the Bronchos let Missouri Southern get by with an 81-75 win in Edmond – the first and only home loss of the year for UCO.

Saturday afternoon, in the MIAA Game of the Week, Willenborg scored 31 points to go with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots as the Bronchos beat Pittsburg State 69-59 to move into a six-team tie for second place in the league standings.

Willenborg has scored 30 or more points three times this season, 20 or more points in 11 games, and he has nine double-doubles. Through 20 games played, he is leading the MIAA in scoring (21.4 PPG), rebounding (9.2 RPG), and blocked shots (3.2 BPG).

The junior is also continuing to alter the UCO record book. His 64 blocks this season are the third most in school history (Johnny Tyson, 126, 1993-94; Fred Tyler, 65, 1991-92). Willenborg is also up to second place for career blocks at UCO with his 134 blocks trailing only Jason Pritchett's 147 from 2000-03.

Central Oklahoma has two road games in league play this week. The Bronchos play at Nebraska Kearney on Thursday night and will visit Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon. UCO returns to Hamilton Field House again next week and wraps up January with home games against Newman and Emporia State.
