WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Emmanuel Skillings captured the 197-pound championship to lead a Central Oklahoma contingent at the Roger Denker Open hosted by Central Missouri Sunday.
The Bronchos sent 13 key backups to the all-day tournament and returned with 11 top-six placers, including three at 125 and two each at 141, 149, 184 and 197. UCO went 43-20 on the day with 29 bonus-point wins.
Skillings beat teammate Jackson Blackburn for the 197 title and Cole Mayfield also had a runner-up showing at 149. The Bronchos added third-place finishes from 141 Canon Acklin and 184 Cameron Johnson, while 125 Guy Clevenger, 141 Shaun Muse and 184 Seth Sarasua took fourth and 149 Kasen Miller came in fifth. Kaden Spragis and Aden Sanders shared fifth place.
Skillings dominated on his way to the gold medal, collecting four bonus wins in a perfect 4-0 day. The senior opened the day with a 44-second fall, followed with a 21-4 technical fall and then had a second-period pin before earning a 10-2 major decision over Blackburn in the finals.
Blackburn made the title bout with a 13-1 major decision, first-period fall and tight 6-5 semifinal victory. Mayfield advanced to the finals with a 16-3 major decision, 8-5 triumph and an 8-1 win in sudden-victory before losing a 6-1 decision.
