Bronchos Host No. 16 Pitt State Saturday

Central Oklahoma Aiming To End Losing Streak To Gorillas

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma hosts No. 16 Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon in an MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

UCO is 7-9 on the season with a 2-5 record in the MIAA. The Bronchos are looking to get back in the win column after a midweek setback in a double overtime loss to Missouri Southern. Pittsburg State is 13-3 on the season with a 6-1 record in conference play and is coming off an 11-point win at Rogers State earlier this week.

"Consistency is key for us right now," first-year UCO head women's basketball coach Hannah Moeller said. "When we play well for four quarters, we have a chance. If we can avoid those stretches where we lose production or minimize those slumps, we're going to be in a better spot. But we also have to learn how to finish when we get to that point."

In December, Central Oklahoma lost at then No. 8 Pitt State 62-59. The Bronchos had a chance to win the game in the final 30 seconds. On Wednesday, UCO had a similar position with Missouri Southern in regulation.

"Turning a program around takes time and you have to be in those positions to learn what to do," Moeller said. "We're giving ourselves a chance and we're hopeful it's going to come together soon."

Central Oklahoma averages 64.9 points per game this season and shoots 37.9 percent as a team. The Bronchos shoot 26.9 percent from behind the 3-point line and average 4.4 made 3-pointers per game. UCO shoots 66.2 percent from the free-throw line and average 12.4 makes per game.

UCO freshman Nykaiya Dillard leads the Bronchos in scoring at 13.0 points per game. She has a team-high 74 made baskets and leads Central in both free-throws made (54) and attempted (80). Dillard also averages 1.9 steals per game.

Kaitlyn McCarn averages 11.3 points per game to give UCO two in double figures. The sophomore guard adds 5.0 rebounds and just over one steal per game. McCarn has 71 made baskets this season and is also a 78.9 percent free-throw shooter (30-for-38).

Another sophomore, Jerney Bennett, has been filling up the stat sheet for the Bronchos. She averages 11.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.6 blocks per game this season. Bennett leads the country in blocked shots (73) and is second in Division II in blocks per game. She also ranks third in the MIAA in rebounding.

UCO also gets 8.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game from junior Bobbie Fouquet. Olivia Quapaw adds 5.9 points, Peyton Walker chips in 4.5 points, and Kendrick Bailey adds 3.9 points per game. Harley Harbour (3.9) and Talia Pogi (3.7) add to the scoring load as well.

While Dillard leads the team with 1.9 steals per game, she is one of five Bronchos averaging more than one. Walker averages 1.3 steals per contest and McCarn, Bennett, and Bailey all average 1.1 steals per game.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State have played for more than 40 years with Pitt owning a 30-12 advantage in the all-time series. UCO trails 18-5 in the series since joining the MIAA. The Bronchos are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Pitt State comes to Edmond averaging 72.9 points per game. The Gorillas shoot 40.3 percent overall, 29.3 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 75.3 percent from the free-throw line. PSU averages 5.8 made threes per game and 17.8 made free-throws per game.

Ja'Miya Brown (13.9), Marin Adams (12.7), and Harper Schreiner (12.3) lead the team in scoring. Kaycee McCumber, who averages 8.1 points per game, leads the team in rebounding an MIAA-high 9.5 rebounds per game. Schreiner also pulls down 8.4 boards per game.

Central Oklahoma hits the road next week for games at Nebraska Kearney and at No. 6 Fort Hays State. The Bronchos return home for games with Newman and Emporia State on the final weekend in January.
