Matthew Willenborg Named National Player of the Week

Junior Forward Earns NABC/D2CIDA Honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matthew Willenborg was named NABC National Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the Division II Conference Information Directors Association (D2CIDA).
 
Willenborg is a junior forward from Norman, Oklahoma. He was also named MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday.
 
"Matt has been so great this season and was really good this past week," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We are so happy for him. This is a big honor. There are so many talented players at this level and a lot of them have big games every week. For Matt to be named national player of the week is a big deal and we are really happy for him."
 
This past week, Willenborg averaged 32.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and 3.0 steals per game. He led the Bronchos to back-to-back overtime wins in the MIAA, beating Northeastern State and No. 5 Arkansas Fort Smith in Edmond.
 
Willenborg scored 37 points to go with 10 rebounds, four blocks, and four steals on Wednesday night to beat NSU. He also dished out three assists in that game. On Saturday, he scored 27 points to go with nine rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.
 
For the week, Willenborg was 17-for-36 (47.2 pct.) from the floor, 5-for-13 (38.5) from behind the 3-point line, and 25-for-28 (89.3) from the free-throw line. He also played 79-plus total minutes in two games.
 
Willenborg currently leads the MIAA in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. He ranks third in the country in blocks per game and is a Top 25 scorer and Top 15 rebounder nationally. The junior forward has also moved up to No. 7 for blocks in a single season (54) at UCO and is No. 5 for career blocks (124) in Broncho history.
 
Central Oklahoma is 11-7 this season and 4-2 in the MIAA. The Bronchos host Missouri Southern on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. and will also host Pittsburg State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with that game also airing live on 38 The Spot in Kansas City.
