UCO Still First Heading To Final Round Of Regional Championship

Bronchos Leading The Way After 36 Holes With Final Round Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma struggled through the second round of the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional Championship Friday but the Bronchos did maintain their first-place position heading into Saturday's final round.

UCO shot an 8-over-par 292, 12 shots worse than the blistering pace set in the first round Thursday. But UCO is still in the first place.

"The golf course got the better of us, but I was proud of the guys for staying patient and finishing well," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "It will be a grind tomorrow but it's a position we've been in a lot this year, so the guys will be ready."

UCO's 572 leads the field. Saginaw Valley State is second with a 583, while Arkansas Tech and Findlay are tied for third at 584. Missouri St. Louis, Missouri S&T, and Grand Valley State are all tied for fifth at 585.

Nick Canales led the Bronchos on Friday with a 1-under-par 70. He is sixth on the individual standings after 36 holes with a 141 (71-70). Canales was 3-over going to the par-5 eighth but sank back-to-back birdies to make the turn at 36. He continued with two more birdies on Nos. 10 & 11 to get to 1-under, then finished his day with seven straight pars to card a 34 on the back nine.

Bennett Baldwin and Jordan Wilson are both tied for eighth individually. Baldwin shot a 2-over 73 Friday. He was 1-over on the front nine and battled through four bogeys on the back nine with a trio of birdies to finish 2-over on the day. Wilson started the day in first place, but struggled on the front nine, shooting 6-over 41 at the turn. He also battled back with three birdies on the back nine and finished the day with a 4-over 75.

Baylor Bostick shot a 3-over 74 Friday and is 9-over for the tournament after 36 holes. He is 68th individually. Karsten Paciotti shot a 4-over 75 on Friday and is 4-over for the tournament and in 20th place individually.

UCO will tee off in the final five groups Saturday as the Bronchos compete for a second consecutive regional championship. The top four teams and top two individuals not part of those teams will advance to nationals May 19-23 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
