UCO Wins MIAA Quarterfinal Against Rogers State

Bronchos Score 10 Unanswered To Defeat Hillcats

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma opened the MIAA Baseball Championship with a 10-4 win over Rogers State in the league's postseason tournament quarterfinals.

UCO as the No. 4 seed is the highest remaining seed in the tournament as each of the top three seeds lost Thursday. The Bronchos will play No. 8 seed and tournament host Missouri Southern Friday at 1 p.m. in the semifinals. No. 6 Northwest Missouri takes on No. 7 Washburn in the other semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

"Didn't start well today, but we battled and found a way to get it done," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys did a good job of being patient. Anything can happen in a tournament and we saw that today, so the guys did a great job of making sure to stay focused."

Despite the six-run win, Central Oklahoma needed a comeback to prevent being the fourth team to get upset on Thursday. Brett Pense got the start and gave up four runs on five hits in three innings of work. It all came in the third inning against the sophomore right-hander, with Rogers getting four runs on three hits in that frame. Pense did strikeout four batters in three innings.

Dax Sharp, who has started six games for the Bronchos this season, came out of the bullpen in the fourth and shut down Rogers State. The senior lefty allowed only two hits and a walk, struck out three batters, and kept the Hillcats at bay through the ninth. That's when Chase Yarger came out to close the game. While he did hit one batter, he retired three others with groundouts to end the game.

Brooks Miller led the way for the Bronchos going 4-for-4, all singles, with four RBIs and two runs scored. The senior hit in the nine-hole as the designated hitter and was unstoppable on Thursday.

He scored the first run for the Bronchos in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-1. He scored Davan Brady and Grant Randall in the fourth inning to make it 4-3, then scored himself on a single from Aiden Proctor to tie the game.

Miller added another RBI in the fifth, scoring Brady again to make it 7-4. He added one more in the seventh, scoring Brady yet again, this time to make it 10-4.

Proctor went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Randall was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Ty Chapman, Caden Robertson, Orlando Gonzalez, and Brady all had base hits. Brady had a double and Gonzalez a triple. Robertson, Gonzalez, Randall, and Matt Baughn all had one run batted in as well.

Central Oklahoma will now play 8-seed Missouri Southern in the semifinals. The Bronchos swept MSSU in Edmond in March. UCO is 4-1 against Southern in the MIAA Baseball Championship, including a 3-1 record against the Lions in Joplin in the postseason.
